Lancaster, PA - Jill Welch, a partner with the law firm of Barley Snyder LLP, recently completed the Graduate School of Banking Human Resources Management School at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is widely recognized as one of the premier banking schools in the country. “What I appreciated most was GSB’s unique, hands-on approach, combining the business of banking with strategic human resources thinking to gain a clear understanding of the human resource contribution to bottom-line profitability of banks and financial institutions,” notes Welch.

Barley Snyder attorneys strive to understand the business dynamics of their clients, and the GSB HR Management School provided Welch with an excellent opportunity to gain an inside perspective on decision making: “By analyzing financial statements and efficiency ratios, at the GSB sessions we evaluated how hiring and retention decisions, incentive and executive compensation structures, human resources risk management and succession planning can drive the profitability of banking clients.”

Barley Snyder maintains an active practice in the banking area and Welch is an important member of the firm’s client teams for its bank clients. Concentrating a portion of her practice in the banking area has provided Welch with an appreciation of some of the unique challenges currently facing the industry, in areas such as the increased bank regulatory burden and the focus on risk management. In addition to the banking area, Welch works with companies in a wide range of industries advising clients on topics such as:

  • Social media policies and employee handbooks
  • Requests for Family Medical Leave Act and military leaves of absence
  • Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations
  • Wage and hour questions
  • Affirmative action planning
  • Criminal background checks in hiring
  • Conducting performance evaluations and terminations
  • Whistleblower complaints
  • Non-compete and severance agreements
  • Due diligence in business transactions

Jill also litigates cases involving employment discrimination, employee benefits, contracts, collective action wage and hour claims, non-compete cases, unemployment compensation appeals, and whistleblower cases, before administrative tribunals and state and federal courts in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
