For Immediate Release

Lancaster, Pa. – The Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center has named Barley Snyder partner David Freedman its “Pro Bono Attorney of the Year” for 2018.

Freedman received the honor this month at PIRC’s annual “Light of Liberty Awards” in York. This is the second time Freedman has been honored with the award after first receiving the honor for 2015.

Freedman, who speaks fluent Spanish, routinely volunteers with PIRC helping immigrants to the United States receive legal aid they would not have at their disposal otherwise. The organization provides free legal representation, legal counsel, education and advocacy to help immigrants obtain or protect their legal status.

“PIRC is an invaluable resource in Pennsylvania,” he said. “With the heightened awareness of immigration in the United States, people need these types of organizations to protect individuals who may not have the necessary resources available to do it for themselves.”

Barley Snyder managing partner Jeff Lobach said Freedman’s award is a testament to the firm’s commitment to pro bono work. PIRC was born out of the Golden Venture saga in the mid-1990s, when York County attorneys and leaders rose up to help dozens of Chinese immigrants detained at the county’s prison. Lobach was one of the lead attorneys on the case that garnered national attention.

“Our firm’s pro bono work takes many forms,” Lobach said. “David’s work and his longstanding relationship with the Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center is just one of the ways our attorneys give their time and expertise back to the community. We support David’s commitment to PIRC and the other pro bono work he and all of our attorneys do.”

Freedman is a member of the firm’s Immigration and Employment practice groups, and the firm’s Hospitality and Food & Agribusiness industry groups. He is the vice president of the board of directors for the Lancaster Bar Association.
