Lancaster, Pa. – Many southcentral Pennsylvania businesses are eying northern Maryland for expansion in the near future. A good number have moved into the region already.

Barley Snyder’s practice always has been to be where its clients need them, so as its clients expand, the firm has fortified its operations in Maryland by having two of its attorneys take and pass the 2017 Maryland Bar Exam, making them eligible to practice law in the state.

Derek P. Dissinger of Lancaster and Joseph P. Schalk of Mechanicsburg both received notice in April they passed the exam they took in February. They can now expand their practices into the “Old Line State,” helping the firm’s clients already tied to Maryland and standing ready to help the ones sure to follow.

“As we’ve seen our clients move into northern Maryland and the Baltimore area to expand their operations, we are pleased to invest with them,” Barley Snyder managing partner Jeff Lobach said. “We have a Maryland office in Hunt Valley, and we are adding additional capability to it. Our Maryland clients are looking forward to having the additional support. Derek and Joe have specific practices that our clients have been seeking in Maryland, in which we were limited because of state boundaries. Thanks to these two enterprising attorneys, we can provide the service our clients need.”

Dissinger is an attorney in the firm’s Finance & Creditors’ Rights and Real Estate practice groups representing banks and credit unions in a wide range of commercial loan transactions. He is also a licensed title agent in both Pennsylvania and Maryland, which allows him to work on title insurance projects for clients. He also represents buyers and sellers of commercial real estate particularly in the hospitality area, and already has worked on deals for land in Maryland.

Schalk also is in the Finance & Creditors’ Rights Practice Group. His practice includes consumer and commercial collections – including residential mortgage default – as well as related bankruptcy work for financial institutions and lenders.

Barley Snyder opened its Hunt Valley office three years ago. Partner Paul Minnich, the chair of the firm’s Litigation Practice Group, has divided his time between the firm’s York, Hanover and Hunt Valley offices since then.

“The expansion of Pennsylvania businesses into Maryland, including many of our clients, led us to enter practice in Maryland over 20 years ago and the trend has increased in recent years,” Minnich said. “Having multiple attorneys licensed to practice in Maryland as well as a physical office there allows us to meet the growing demand for services in that market.”

Minnich, Dissinger and Schalk are now three of the firm’s four attorneys licensed in Maryland. Of Counsel Indraneela Dixit, part of the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group, also is licensed in Maryland.
