For Immediate Release

Malvern, Pa. – Barley Snyder partner Salvatore Anastasi has been recognized by the American Bar Association Intellectual Property Law Section for his leadership in the section.

As the vice chair of the ABA’s Patent System Planning Committee, Anastasi in 2016 helped write letters to the U.S. Department of Commerce, later meeting with the leadership of the department, to express the section’s concerns over a proposed shared services initiative from the department and its potentially adverse effects on stakeholders in the U.S. Patent System. Anastasi also is leading the section’s recently formed Patent Harmonization Task Force.

For his efforts before the department, and leadership of both the committee and task force, the ABA’s section of intellectual property law in April awarded Anastasi with an “Outstanding Leadership Contribution” recognition.

“The shared services initiative is something the U.S. Department of Commerce is doing that will have detrimental effects on inventors and patent and trademark applicants,” Anastasi said. “It has the potential to tax inventors and applicants by diverting fees paid for patents and trademarks to support other DOC agencies. As a group, the Patent System Planning Committee went into action to make sure the department’s leadership knew exactly what they were doing and how it could harm the patent and trademark system.”

Anastasi is a partner at Barley Snyder and the chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group. He also is on the board of directors of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, where he helped draft a letter to President Donald Trump in January to make the new president aware of various intellectual property issues.
