Kevin has been on both sides of the patent prosecution process, first as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and now as a patent attorney preparing patent applications and advocating in front of the examiners at the USPTO to turn his clients’ patent applications into issued patents. The dual nature of his experience has given him an intricate, inside knowledge of how the patent process works, what a patent examiner is looking for in a patent application, and the best course to chart for how to represent a client throughout a range of patent-related matters.
Kevin is an associate in the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group who also works in trademark cases and litigation support within all areas of intellectual property law, including research and strategy development.
Kevin’s diverse background as a USPTO patent examiner – where his field of examination involved the complex software used to control vehicles – is also supplemented to his real-world experience working in the engineering community. As an aerospace engineering major at the University of Virginia, he also gained professional experience in the research and development department of a Philadelphia-area airline safety manufacturer.
He’ll receive European patent prosecution experience in September of 2018 when he will spend four weeks in Germany working with Grünecker, a Munich-based intellectual property law firm that Barley Snyder often shares international clients with.
In Chester County, Kevin has committed himself to improving the quality of life in suburban Philadelphia through volunteering. In spring 2018, Kevin graduated from Leadership Chester County, a professional development and service engagement opportunity designed to enhance the community. After his graduation, the Chester County Council of the Boy Scouts of America named Kevin to its executive board. The inclusion on the board brings Kevin’s Chester County Boy Scout experience full circle: He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout growing up in West Chester’s Boy Scout Troop 6.
Kevin is also a member of the Innovation Technology Action Group (ITAG), a promotion agency of the Chester County Economic Development Council. The group is a collection of professionals throughout Chester County who encourage technology careers to students through outreach and networking. He also is an active member of the Chester County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers’ Division, including his involvement as a volunteer juror in the Chester County Mock Trial. The program helps give aspiring young attorneys in-courtroom experience.
In his free time, Kevin enjoys running in charity 5K races throughout suburban Philadelphia to aid charitable causes.
